Why Not Both

When most active adults think about physical therapy, they typically think about exercises on the  table or ground, a 10-15 minute routine directed towards some type of injury, or maybe something that doesn’t quite fit their fitness and performance goals they have in mind. Here at Tundra Performance and Physical Therapy, we are looking to change that perspective on how people view performance physical therapy and what we can do for them.

Why a physical therapist for a trainer?

I’ve worked in a fitness facility the entirety of my career. There are numerous personal trainers who are accomplished and more than qualified providers out there. With that said, with how much schooling and education that goes into learning the human body and physiology to becoming a physical therapist, we have the added capability to blend the two arenas together. This not only allows us to work on physical deficits that are plaguing your performance to participate fully in an activity you enjoy, but also allows us to continue to look beyond and towards your performance goals.

So what does this look like?

With our sessions being 1 on 1 and 60 minutes long, they give us flexibility in how to approach this. Could mean the first portion being manual therapy or soft tissue management with a sensitive joint or muscle in preparation for the session, or beginning with a rehabilitation regiment to prime the system. This then allows us to flow into a training session, where we might pair fundamental core lifts with corrective exercises or rehabilitation fillers. Depends on the situation and scenario, but at the end of the day, a proper evaluation, knowledge of the provider, and the environment that allows adaptability create multiple avenues to success.

Everyone engages with health and fitness in their own way. For some its yoga and pilates, for others its running and mountain biking. Whatever yours is, resistance training is the perfect blend to reduce injuries and create longevity within your activities. Working with a physical therapist to combine the two may be the perfect option for you.
