What's My Age Again?
What does a song from 1999 have to do with health and wellness?
Time and time again, age is commonly referenced as a primary limitation and can be a major psychological hurdle amongst many individuals in achieving their fitness goals. While age plays a role and consideration to muscle growth, the significance of strength training remains ever present.
After the age of 30, our muscle mass naturally begins to decline at a rate of 3-5% annually and places us at risk for a condition called sarcopenia. In conjunction, we also see natural downward trends in hormone levels, metabolism for weight management, balance and coordination, and threatens our quality of life. Strength and resistance training has the opportunity to be the hero in all these factors. Not only can it assist management of these downward trends but also reverse a lot of these changes.
Strength and resistance training plays an abundant role in not only counteracting the aging process but provides other substantial benefits. It can contribute to bone density, crucial in preventing osteoporosis. Improve stability, enhancing joint health and functionality. Provides mood and mental benefits, reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. The benefits of strength training are endless.
While I believe that there is no greater population of people that benefit from strength training more than individuals in later decades, I strongly push resistance work amongst all ages. While age is a factor in potential entry point to resistance training, in addition to rate and development of muscle growth, there isn’t a single individual out there that wouldn’t profit from its benefits. With the right personalized and gradual approach, with proper supervision and guidance, can ensure the effectiveness and safety of strength training for individuals of all ages.
