L.S.H.S.
This week were diving into my favorite topic in the world that once I get going, there’s no turning back.
LIFTING SOME HEAVY SHIT
In accordance with International Women's Day on Saturday, lifting heavier weights is one of my most frequented conversations and discussions I get to have with women. The most common rebuttal I get…… and I hear it quite often….. I don’t want to look bulky. Two things. First, I doubt you’ll hate the muscles popping out in the mirror. Second, let's get there first and figure out the details from there.
Lifting heavy for women in my physical therapy and training programming is non-negotiable. There’s too much at stake not to.
30% of postmenopausal women in the US have osteoporosis and 54% are right behind with osteopenia. Lifting heavy weights and resistance training in general is arguably the safest and easiest way to not only stop the progression of osteoporosis but counteract it. Yes, you read that correctly. You have the opportunity to not only slow the changes of osteoporosis but also reverse the aging process when it comes to your bones.
Bones are smart. They just need an instruction manual. They just need to be told what to do. By introducing resistance training and heavier lifting into the conversation, we’re telling our musculoskeletal system, its time to go to work. Trust me, there’s no age limit or expiration date.
Not only do your bones benefit but your mental health follows suit. While aerobic training is good for you and your heart alike, moving heavier weights releases an insane amount of endorphins that boosts your mood, combats stress, and your confidence goes through the roof. Getting stronger is empowering as hell. Not only will you love seeing how that new triceps muscle pops in the light when you flex, but you’re going to want to see what else you can achieve.
While not everyone has set numbers for weights as goals, you’ll naturally want to get to that next level. I stand firm on this, moving a heavy barbell ranks towards the top in most self empowering activities you can do for yourself.
I’ve shared this in the past, every person is on their own health and fitness journey and I stand by this. We’re all exploring and all looking for our own answers. But introducing lifting heavy weights remains one my favorite conversations to have with people, especially women. To be able to see their change not only physically but mentally as well. It might not look the same from person to person, but at the end of the day, it's about finding your way to see success!
