Special Edition: Burn Boot Camp Reflections

This past weekend we had an awesome opportunity to assist and guide a Form Clinic with our friends at Burn Boot Camp - Bear Creek. What a turnout? Awesome to have so many engaged participants who jumped in head first with us and asked some amazing questions along the way. Within those questions we had some consistent themes come up through both our 1-Arm Row and Lunge reviews that I felt were not only applicable to the clients at Burn Boot Camp but I thought would be great to share with everyone else.

1-Arm Row

The biggest theme that came up when teaching our 1-Arm Row section was trunk position. Overall, everyone grasped what arm slot and pull back range of motion worked for them, along with how to achieve a flat back and proper stabilization really quickly. But as we got into exploring the movement with our participants, the biggest correction came in trunk position. Most people were too upright in their set up, which in turn results in a less effective pull. By getting more on top of the dumbbell, not only do we improve our efficiency with pulling the dumbbell vertically but we improve our capacity to strengthen our lats and mid accordingly. Finally, it also strengthens our low back by putting us in a true hinge position encouraging better stabilization.

Lunges

For lunges, we had a lot of discussion surrounding how different body types may dictate certain preferences for lunge and step length along with trunk position. We also discussed modifications when pain may be present such as altering your step length, trunk position, and shin angle. At the end of the day, the conclusion surrounding these movements was there’s a lot of right answers to what your lunge may look like and ultimately comes down to first what your body may self select and prefer, and second if there are any other symptoms that may dictate modification as a transition back to pain free.
